Career Development Opportunities

A special program designed to promote staff development and support and encourage post-high school education for South County Health Staff. Five $1,000 scholarships are granted each year.

College and education program representatives present information on degrees and programs that prepare staff for healthcare careers.

This program aims to support our most challenging patient care areas for retention and recruitment by providing monthly payments directly to student loan holders for enrolled night shift RNs, Surgical Services RNs, Surgical Technicians, and Respiratory Therapists. We recognize each member of the South County Health team is essential to delivering on our mission to be Rhode Island’s Most Trusted Health Partner and that alleviating some student loan burden may be a critical component of retaining and recruiting an exceptional workforce.

South County Health recognizes the importance of formal education for a workforce committed to achieving professional excellence and the highest quality patient care, service, and other outcomes. We are proud to provide financial support to staff investing in their own career development through our Tuition & Certification Assistance Program.

Up to 4 courses annually are eligible for reimbursement. Per diems working 20 hours+ on a rolling 12-month basis are eligible. Please note the benefit now requires continued employment for one-year period from the reimbursement.

Pass/Fail classes are eligible for tuition reimbursement.


The $250 National Certification bonus recognizes professional excellence. Multiple certification recognitions are available for those changing specialties or professions over their SCH career.

Reimbursement for preparatory courses and materials for the initial certification attainment is now available through tuition reimbursement.

South County Health has partnered with Rhode Island Student Loan Authority (RISLA) to assist employees with preparing, planning and paying for education. Services include free college planning services for employees and their families, assistance completing financial aid forms, resources for scholarship searches, low-cost education loans, and for those employees who are no longer in school, exclusive rate discounts for refinancing student loans. Workforce Development Opportunities

A paid six-week training program partnered with 911 Programs to prepare for state certified nursing assistant license. Upon completion of the program, you transition into a Patient Care Technician role in one of the inpatient nursing departments. This is an entry level position that is a key part of the patient care team.

A paid 12-week training program partnered with 911 Programs to prepare to become a certified lab assistant/phlebotomist in our dynamic laboratory, playing an essential role in the care of patients.

Join our one-year transition program for new nurse graduates to enhance your professional skills and find the right career path for your future in the nursing profession.

Our Nursing Student Internship is the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of healthcare alongside seasoned professionals. Under the guidance of Registered Nurses, students engage in hands-on patient care, honing skills and expanding their knowledge base.

Interested in a career in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit? Join the six-month transition program for nurses who want to enter the peri anesthesia specialty. This program includes monthly 4-hour classes with didactic education and hands-on skills practice while also orienting in the PACU with a nurse preceptor.

Is the Operating Room something that excites you? We offer a six-month transition program for nurses who want to work in the Operating Room. Participants receive online didactic education provided by AORN and meet regularly with the surgical services educator for both didactic and hands-on skills practice.

Unique opportunity for benefit-eligible employees interested in pursuing career advancement as a Surgical Technician. This is a 12-month certificate program at Community College of Rhode Island with tuition covered in full by SCH for accepted applicants.

A Coding Specialist Development Program for coding professionals to acquire their CCS certification within one year. Candidates gain experience in ICD 10 CM, ICD 10 PCS, and CPT coding experience. They must already have one and a half years of coding experience to apply, and then attempt their CCS certification. South County Health allows two attempts of the CCS certification exam, and will cover both if the second exam is successfully completed. This will be through our tuition reimbursement program. Exam preparation will also be covered.
